INFORMS Simulation Society Business Meeting
2008 Winter Simulation Conference, Miami, FL
December 9, 2008

Theresa Roeder

Mike Kuhl, President of the Society, called the meeting to order at 6:19 pm, and thanked the council and committee members. Each person at the meeting introduced themselves (name and affiliation).

Peter Haas gave the Vice President's report. There was a record number of presentations and record attendance at the INFORMS 2008 Annual Meeting: 12 I-Sim-sponsored sessions and 50 presentations. Many thanks to session organizers, S. Andradottir, B. Biller, C. Chen, R. Creasey, S. Henderson, P. Haas, J. Hong, L. Lee, C. Macal, Y. Son, P. White, and H. Wan. There are several upcoming meetings:

  • INFORMS Practice meeting in Phoenix, April 26-28, 2009.
  • CORS/INFORMS Joint Meeting in Toronto, June 14-17, 2009. Anyone interested in organizing a session should contact Peter Haas. The abstract deadline is January 15.
  • The second I-Sim Research Workshop at the University of Warwick (UK), June 25-27, 2009. The theme is the interface between modeling and analysis. 3-5 page extended abstracts will be published in the proceedings. Full papers will be published in a special issue of Simulation.
  • Sixth St. Petersburg Workshop on Simulation in St. Petersburg, Russia, June 28-July 3, 2009.
  • INFORMS Fall meeting in San Diego, October 11-14, 2009.
Anyone interested in organizing a session should contact Peter Haas.

Theresa Roeder gave the Secretary's report. Members are asked to renew their I-Sim membership.

Mike Kuhl gave the Treasurer's report for Bahar Biller. As of September 30, 2008, the Society is in good financial health with a net revenue around $9,000 and an ending balance of around $41,000.

Journal reports were given by Jim Wilson (ACM TOMACS), Marvin Nakayama (Journal on Computing), Shane Henderson (Operations Research), and Steve Chick (Management Science). In addition to general statistics on submissions (which will be available in the newsletter), there were some news items. Jim Wilson reported that ACM TOMACS has a year backlog, and will start publishing 5 papers/issue year to accommodate the increased volume. The journal will appear in journal citation reports beginning in summer 2009, so will have an increased impact factor. Jim Wilson's term as Editor in Chief ends January 1, 2010. Shane Henderson reported that David Simchi-Levi was reappointed Editor in Chief of Operations Research. Steve Chick reported that the department "Stochastic Models and Simulation" will be changing its name to "Stochastic Methods." Pierre L'Ecuyer and Steve Chick will be the associate editors for this department. The journal will be coming under new leadership, so there is a possible shift from a management perspective to a science perspective.

Doug Morrice and Christos Alexopoulos then reported on the joint sponsorship agreement for WSC. The purpose of the agreement was to align WSC with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The agreement was signed by 4 sponsors: INFORMS (through I-Sim), ACM, IIE, and SCS. There are 3 Tech Sponsors: ASA, IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society, and NIST. The ASA relinquished its funds to the 4 sponsoring societies. Each sponsor has 1/4 interest in both income and liabilities. There is a working capital of about $220,000. For the agreement to be completed, both sponsorship and by-law documents have to be merged. At the moment, a few errors that must to be fixed:

1. Every sponsoring society should have 1 member. I-Sim has 2, each with ½ vote.
2. Since only full sponsoring societies have a full vote, what role should technical sponsors play? Will technical sponsors have vote on non-financial issues or no vote at all? The by-laws have to be rectified.
Work on this is ongoing. The first step was to get the agreement signed. (Several sponsors hadn't seen on paper that they were responsible for liabilities.) None of this will have any impact for WSC attendees.

Jim Wilson next reported on the WSC Foundation. The trustees had their annual meeting 11/17/08, and their annual informal breakfast meeting 12/9/08. Deb Medeiros has joined the trustees for 2009. Many thanks to Tom Schriber for his service. The Foundation by-laws are available online at www.wscfoundation.org. Total assets are $44,933.25, roughly half of which are in CDs. The rest is in a money market account. The goal is to shift the CDs to have them come due in March to allow money to be available for WSC account closing. Loans of up to $10,000 and grants of up to $5,000 are available with 3/5 of the trustees approving. The Foundation's goal is to provide financial liquidity to help WSC if need be.

Bob Sargent reported on the Simulation Archive. It is now fully endowed at $15,000. An advisory committee (Dick Nance, Bob Sargent, Jim Wilson) has been established. The Archive is available at www.lib.ncsu.edu/simarchive or http://tinyurl.com/simarchive. Many thanks to I-Sim members for their support of the archives. The goal for next year is to increase the endowment to $20,000 so the interest can support the endowment. Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible donation should contact Greg Raschke at greg_raschkencsu.edu. Several awards were announced and given.

  • INFORMS Fellows: Paul Glasserman and Richard Nance were named INFORMS Fellows at the Fall meeting. Dick Nance's award was presented to him tonight because he was not able to attend the fall meeting.
  • CUMW: Dashi Singham of UC Berkeley received the Committee on Underrepresented Minorities and Women (CUMW) Award.
  • Ph.D. Colloquium: Soumyadip Ghosh, Wai Kin (Victor) Chan, and DJ van der Zee presented the Ph.D Colloquium participants with their awards. There were 10 presentations and 35 posters.
  • ACM SIGSIM/I-Sim Best Student Paper: There were 13 nominees and 8 finalists. Ali Tafazzoli of North Carolina State University (OR/MS-focused paper) and Volkan Ustun of Auburn University (CS-focused paper) each received $200.
  • Outstanding Publication: Soren Asmussen and Peter Glynn received the I-Sim Outstanding Publication Award for their book "Stochastic Simulation: Algorithms and Analysis." The committee consisted of Paul Glasserman, Christos Alexopoulos, and Seong-Hee Kim.
  • Distinguished Service: Russell Barton received the I-Sim Distinguished Service Award. In addition to serving in every I-Sim office, he played a key role together with Susan Sanchez in transforming the College on Simulation to the Simulation Society, in clarifying officer roles, and in promoting the membership committee, CUMW, and Ph.D. Colloquium. He has served in an editorial capacity for multiple journals, and in multiple conference organization roles. The nominating committee consisted of Russell Cheng, Barry Nelson, and Marvin Nakayama.
There was no new business.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:26.
